So what happens after you achieve your big goal. Then what? I just ran my 1st ever marathon, the Big Sur Int. Marathon. This has been on my goal list for the last 7 months. It was a big deal! In my running community I talked about how it’s easy to just ‘roll into’ another goal unconsciously without first creating awareness around what drives the goal. I took some time to connect with my own thoughts and journaled to get clarity of what’s driving my action. Three thoughts that came up for me were: 1) My worthiness as a runner is tied to a (big) goal. Growing up for me ‘doing something’ definitely spelled a sense of belonging and worth and if we unconsciously perpetuate this belief then ‘who am I without a goal?’.
2) I enjoyed the attention from everybody being the ‘marathoner in training’. Unconsciously, we might be seeking external attention (validation) to motivate us to go on.
3) Fear of not ‘getting back on the horse’ and slipping into undesired habits/ old patterns etc. For the majority of my life, I had a love-hate relationship with my body (heavy on the ‘hate’) and just didn’t feel I could trust my body/ mind.
What are your unconscious beliefs that drive your goal setting? What are your real reasons for choosing these goals. Once you create awareness around them, you get to choose if you want to keep them or let them go. Run empowered.
